Grand Army of the Republic Building

We are proud to be housed in the historic G.A.R. Building. this beautiful castle-like structure was designed by architect Julian Hess and used as a gathering spot for civil war veterans. Construction commenced in 1899 on this five-story wonder.

in the early forties, The G.A.R. became the city's parks & rec office. the building was later vacated in 1982. in 2011, it was purchased from the city of detroit by the media production firm, Mindfield. they fully renovated the G.A.R. restoring AS MUCH of its original charm such as possible-- including a dramatic, sweeping staircase and beautiful framed windows. 

Mindfield occupies the top two floors, while the second floor houses our private event space, castle hall. Republic and our sister restaurant, Parks & rec Diner occupy the first floor, sharing a kitchen and commitment to providing an unforgettable experience.
